Canadian band Jons are releasing their second album At Work On Several Things through the Paris-based label Field Mates Records.
The label was set up in the summer of 2015 as a vehicle for Jimmy Whispers’ first LP. The influence of Mac DeMarco smiles beatifically over the album’s opening track and second single, "Trip Ads".
Jons formed in late 2013 and their debut album, Serfs of Today, followed in June of the following year. A leap forward in production and equipment, At Work On Several Things is nonetheless still a home-recorded effort, though buzzing with the energy of their live shows. The writing has developed enormously as well, and their skill for making the weird wonderful is perfectly encapsulated on "Trip Ads".
The song opens with a crooked guitar intro - one of those melodies that has you trying to work out whether the guitar’s in tune or not, but then figuring you don’t much care. They join the ranks of bands like Pavement and Queens of the Stone Age, though definitely leaning toward the former, that make something that should be wrong sound catchy and inevitable.
