Jenny Lewis and Serengeti release latest collaboration "Idiot"
Jenny Lewis and Serengeti have returned with their third collaborative track "Idiot".
Lewis and Serengeti released their first collaborative single "Unblu" in December last year, and returned in January with "Vroom Vroom". Today (10 March), Lewis and Serengeti have unveiled their third single "Idiot".
Serengeti says of the latest track, "Jenny sent the beat and it’s always a great joy, it’s fun to do. I wrote a small rap about a man who gets knocked out by his mom’s boyfriend and then reconnects with his high school girlfriend."
Lewis adds, "These songs with Dave start with a late night feeling and access to - because of where we’re at right now in the world - whatever you have in your house that makes a sound. Or, I don’t have Pro Tools, so I use my phone, and I’ve got a little drum machine and a drum kit. Sometimes when I’m doing my vocals, Forensic Files is on in the background. That makes it onto the track because that’s just what’s happening."
As Stereogum reported last year, a note accompanying "Unblu" confirmed that the duo have recorded multiple songs. The note revealed that the two met at Berlin's People Festival in 2018, and Serengeti aka Dave Cohn asked Lewis to sing on a song about Tom Selleck turning down the part of Indiana Jones. They bonded over boxing and Lewis went on to throw Cohn a show at Dino’s in East Nashville after they got back from Europe.
The note also revealed that Serengeti asked Lewis for seven songs "Just piano or guitar or whatever!", and when the coronavirus pandemic hit Lewis and Cohn started working from their homes in LA and Chicago. "The result is five songs made on Jenny’s iPhone, for Dave. Beats, bass, drums, digital tanpura & topline, sent via text, ripe for Dave’s poetry. To accompany the music, Jenny made videos on her phone during the witching hours, editing while under the covers."
