Guess who sold more CDs than Drake in 2016
Drake's dominated the airwaves in 2016, but he's still been unable to shift enough CD copies of VIEWS to topple this Big Dog from the number one spot.
Drake is 2016's most streamed artist, his single "One Dance" topped the iTunes sales charts, while latest LP VIEWS scored the iTunes album sales #1. People on digital devices bloody love the Toronto singer/rapper, but he's not quite cracked the physical market in the same way - he's probably not all that bothered, really, considering how much he's made from his various projects this year, but it's an intriguely massive contrast between the two formats.
So who is this mystery artist reeling in the sales? This guy.
Yep, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The long-deceased classical composer beat stiff competition from Drake, Kanye West, Beyoncé, and many more to land the best-selling CD of 2016 - and the release in question only came out in October.
Mozart 225: The New Complete Edition has moved over 1.25 million CDs since 28 October, according to Billboard. The massive boxset features input from 60 orchestras, and the run time extends over 10 days - it features every single known composition by Mozart. It costs over £300, and is described as "most authoritative, complete, and scholarly box set ever devoted to the work of a single composer".
How did this monstrous boxset outsell Drake you ask? Well, every CD in the set is counted as a single sale... and there are 200 CDs included with Mozart 225. That means rougly 6250 copies of the boxset have been sold - so Mozart scoops the accolade on a technicality, but the industry say it counts.
