Future Islands and The War On Drugs form mutual appreciation society at End of the Road
The final night of year number ten of the End of the Road festival was dominated by stirring sets from Future Islands and The War On Drugs.
While Samuel T Herring's band were the penultimate act on the main Woods stage, he and the rest of Future Islands made sure they treated it like a headline show...and those trademark roars and northern soul dance moves were all present and correct and showing no signs of wear and tear from constant touring.
Not averse to rambling monologue peppered with choice language between songs, Herring took time out to praise his "brothers" in The War On Drugs who they seem to follow around Europe on endless jaunts and as the band launched into the likes of "Tin Man" and "A Song For Our Grandfathers", Adam Granduciel's boys had a song dedicated for them. Of course, the crowd wasn't going to be leaving until they'd heard "Seasons (Waiting On You)" and thankfully Future Islands don't look like tiring of it anytime soon either as it was delivered with as much passion as the first time we all heard it.
A hard act to follow, but The War On Drugs picked up the gauntlet and ran with it during a stunning final night set. "Red Eyes" from Lost In the Dream was torn through with as much passion as I've seen it played, while "Brothers" and "Eyes To The Wind" were both touching moments. Repaying Herring's compliments, Granduciel dedicated "An Ocean In Between the Waves" to his "brothers from Baltimore".
The War On Drugs played with a passion and verve befitting of this birthday celebration and if there was any naysayers in the crowd before this blistering, emotional set there wasn't likely to be any left by 11pm.
