Foxygen make startling return with a "celebration of death and nothing"
Sam France and Jonathan Rado have returned as Foxygen with gloriously twisted goth-pop number "America".
"America" is full of '60s stings and Disney strings - it's all pomp and glitter, with rousing refrains of "Aaaaaaamerica!" and showbizzy brass. It's all very grand - but it's also cartoonishly spooky, with Halloween howls and cinematic hooks sweeping in like offcuts from the Harry Potter OST. It's an unusual return, that's for sure. It's almost an overture as opposed to a full song, whipping through a multitude of styles and rhythms and moods, with one main earworm wriggling along throughout.
The new song is described as a "celebration of death and nothing", and features a 34-piece orchestra.
It's the first new material since 2014 LP ...And Star Power, although they did lob out curveball ditty "24 HOUR LOVER MAN" last year.
In other Foxygen-y news, the band's Jonathan Rado spent time this year producing/recording Do Hollywood, the stunning debut record from teenage brothers The Lemon Twigs.
