Father John Misty shows off his pop chops with trilogy of "Generic Pop Songs"
Father John Misty has shared three big new tracks - "Generic Pop Song #3", "Generic Pop Song #9", and "Generic Pop Song #16".
The tracks - not part of the tracklisting for Misty's upcoming record Pure Comedy - arrive after a major trashing of the pop industry. Misty last year worked with Lady Gaga and Beyoncé on their latest records.
"Okay, let me tell you as someone who made a grotesque foray into this world - because I have also been subjected to this music my whole life and wanted to know how the sausage was made just out of fucking morbid curiosity - there is nothing not wildly audience-tested and calculated about this fucking music," Misty told Pitchfork. "Exempting myself from this conversation, the people who get accused of being calculated? Psht! It’s truly a joke... if you think that pop stars are anything other than prisoners, then you are fucking kidding yourself. I know them. They are crying for help in their music."
It's unclear if "Generic Pop Song #3" is the same as the B-side for the "Real Love Baby" 7" - titled "Rejected Generic Pop Song, March ’15 #3". In any case, all three new offerings are very polished and veer away from the lounge-y folk pop observations Misty's grown a reputation for.
Pure Comedy is out next month - we've already heard a handful of songs from it, including the title track, "Ballad Of The Dying Man", "Total Entertainment Forever", and "Two Wildly Different Perspectives".
