E4 acquires rights to hit US show Empire
Empire, the musical drama based around a family vying for control of a media corporation, is headed to E4.
Created by Lee Daniels and Danny Strong (director and writer of The Butler, respectively), the show focuses on hip-hop mogul Lucious Lyon, his ex-wife and three sons as they all fight over company, Empire Entertainment. It's received rave reviews in the States, and was commissioned for a second season shortly after episode two aired.
Even in its first season, it's attracted some big name stars: Courtney Love, Gladys Night, Snoop Dogg, Rita Ora and Juicy J to name a few.
Of the acquisition, Channel 4’s Chief Creative Officer, Jay Hunt, said: “Empire has been a record breaking hit in the US. It's grown and grown as audiences have fallen in love with its unforgettable characters and soundtrack. I'm delighted it's coming to E4."
