Dr Dre and Jimmy Iovine tease “something...fantastic” for their next big project
Music legends and Beats By Dre founders Jimmy Iovine and Dre Dre hinted on a new project they’re working together at a Q&A in Brixton last night.
"There’s some things we’re working on right now," said Dr Dre (pictured above with director Allen Hughes and Iovine) . "We’re in the beginning stage of something that’s going to be fantastic for this third act of my life.”
The pair were appearing at The Ritzy in Brixton where 300 people attended the UK premiere of The Defiant Ones, a four-part series which premieres on Netflix next Friday. The documentary tells the story of Dre and Iovine’s unlikely partnership from the early years of The Chronic right through to the inception of Beats by Dr. Dre. The series won Best Music Film at the 2018 Grammys.
A host of special guests from across the worlds of music and sport attended, including will.i.am, Avelino, Akala and Laura Mvula as well; as footballers Marcus Rojo and Eric Dier. Following the screening, Dre and Iovine were joined onstage by the director of the documentary, Allen Hughes and took part in a Q & A hosted by Beats president Luke Wood. The notoriously private Dre opened about why he wanted to do the documentary and the creative process behind it.
"I’ve been fortunate enough to be mentored by Jimmy for over 25 years right now, and it’s been remarkable. He’s helped me out with my life, my family, everything, it’s been an amazing adventure," Dre said.
On the reason for his long standing success, Dre puts it down to one thing - determination; "it’s a determination to being successful and do what I love to do. Fortunately I picked something that can make money, but that’s what it is, hardcore determination to be successful." On his creative chemistry with Jimmy Iovine: "I think that comes from our friendship and knowing him for so long. There’s a certain amount of trust in that. Knowing him for so long and knowing how creative he is, it’s a natural process."
