Bikini Kill share previously unheard demo "Ocean Song"
Riot grrl instigators Bikini Kill have shared a previously unheard demo of "Ocean Song". The track, which comes from sessions taken from 1991's debut release Revolution Girl Style Now, is set to be included on the reissue of their debut cassette.
Frontwoman Kathleen Hanna explained how she drew on her experiences of working in a womens' shelter in Olympia when writing the song: “I felt crazy, I felt like I’d been dropped in the middle of the ocean, and I was screaming, ‘Look at all this stuff that’s happening,’ and was just making dolphin noises, nobody could hear me.”
The track, along with previous demo release "Playground", will appear on an upcoming reissue of their 1991 album. For the first time, the reissue will be released on CD, vinyl and digitally with a release date of 22 September. A reproduction of the original cassette will also be available.
There are further plans to reissue other full length albums that the band recorded before their breakup in 1997.
