Ane Brun premieres new single "Directions"; has been listening to DJ Krush and DJ Shadow
“These lyrics are about feeling open and hopeful, that state of mind that sometimes can fill one´s whole being," Ane Brun tells us about curveball new track "Directions".
"Those moments perhaps are what makes the other days when you feel the opposite manageable. At least I try to remind myself of all the good days when things get a little darker. "
The new single by the prolific Norwegian is taken from her as yet untitled new album, due for a release in the autumn, and was co-produced by Swedish singer/songwriter Tobias Froberg (who also duetted with Brun on "Rubber and Soul" and "Love and Misery").
"Directions" sees a change of focus for Brun's songwriting, with greate play on vocal melody and shuffling, percussive layers. "There were no melodic instruments involved, which is something new to me," she explains. "During the making of [the song] I found a little note on my phone saying 'my voice is louder than the marching band' and I found that an image of a single human voice drowning out marching drums and loud horns was very powerful. An image of feeling invincible.”
Brun describes the new album as "more extrovert" and says she's been listeing to "DJ Shadow, DJ Krush, this amazing trip hop, jazz and electronica stuff...also, some Charles Mingus and Duke Ellington," which seems consistent with what we're hearing on "Directions".
"Directions" is released by Brun's own label, Balloon Ranger Recordings, on 10 March 2015.
