Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes announces debut solo record with lead single "History Repeats"
Alabama Shakes' Brittany Howard has announced her debut solo album Jaime, alongside revealing the lead single "History Repeats".
It's been four years since Alabama Shakes' last album Sound & Color, and now Brittany Howard of the group has embarked on her solo venture.
"History Repeats" is the debut taster of Howard's forthcoming solo record Jaime, and is, in her own words, "as much a personal song as it is a song about us as a human species. Our times of success may propel us forward, but our repeating failures hold us back from evolving into harmony."
Howard's album is named after her late sister, who taught her to write poetry and play piano, but died of cancer when they were still teenagers. "The title is in memoriam, and she definitely did shape me as a human being," says Howard. "But, the record is not about her. It’s about me. I’m pretty candid about myself and who I am and what I believe. Which is why I needed to do it on my own."
To record the album, Howard assembled a band made up of Alabama Shakes bassist Zac Cockrell, keyboard player Robert Glasper, and drummer Nate Smith.
