Kim Gordon's closet sale raises over $17k for the Downtown Women's Centre

On Sunday (27 August), Kim Gordon held a closet sale full of limited, exclusive items from her own wardrobe, as well as her streetwear line, X-girl.

When Gordon announced the sale, Kathleen Hanna jumped into the comments section to highlight just how coveted some of the items of clothing would be: "I would go but I am scared someones [sic] gonna pull a knife on me over a pair of pants," she joked.

Gordon and stylist Christina Turner co-hosted the sale, in Los Angeles, outside of Submission Beauty on Rowena Avenue. Speaking to Los Angeles Times, Taylor revealed, “Inspiration for this sale was born out of the necessity to streamline and create breathing room Our collective thought was, ‘Why not find these pieces new homes where their value will be cherished?’”

This closet sale happened to place on the same weekend that late NYC rock legend Tom Verlaine’s massive book collection was put on sale to the public in Brooklyn, and it follows in the footsteps of Chloë Sevigny who recently held her own sale in New York.

Following the event, Gordon announced on her Instagram that the sale had raised $17,000 for the Downtown Women's Centre, which is the only organisation in Los Angeles focused exclusively on serving and empowering women experiencing homelessness and formerly homeless women.

As reported by Los Angeles Times, the closet sale suited a range of budgets, and spanned many eras of Gordon's life. If you were happy to part with $1,000, you were able to take home the Isabel Marant high-waisted metallic gold shorts the singer wore when she performed at the 2020 BBC Radio 6 Music Festival in London.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, the silver sequinned open-toe boots worn alongside Pat Smear, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic at Nirvana’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame were sold for $20.

Last year, a Bandcamp abortion rights benefit album and t-shirt with Kim Gordon's cover art raised over $230,000 in 24 hours.
