Fiona Apple scores and narrates new short film The Court Watchers
Fiona Apple has scored a new short film titled The Court Watchers, and also narrates some of the film.
The Court Watchers is a new short film about the importance of court watching, which Fiona Apple has been doing since 2021. Apple has scored the short film, and is also one of the narrators.
Stereogum reports that in 2021, Apple became involved with Court Watch PG, a huge virtual court watching organisation, and has since become a dedicated court watcher, and is friends with Court Watch PG director Carmen Johnson.
She told The Washington Post that her own arrest for drug possession in 2012 is part of why she got involved with the film, "It was drugs, it was hash. I wasn’t violent. But I could have gone away for 10 years, you know? And that’s happening to people all of the frickin’ time. It’s happening to people every day. For less."
Injustice happens in empty courtrooms. But in a growing number of places, people are holding the system accountable by showing up in court. Volunteering to court watch. Documenting what they see.
