Cause of death revealed for Taylor Swift fan who died following Rio De Janeiro show
In late November, two fans died following Taylor Swift's run of shows in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The cause of death for 23-year-old Ana Clara Benevides Machado has now been revealed.
Ana Clara Benevides passed out during the second song that Taylor Swift played on 17 November at Estádio Nilton Santos in Rio de Janeiro, and died hours later at a local hospital. Over the weekend of 17-19 November, extreme temperatures were recorded across Rio, with record-breaking numbers up to 39.1°C, and the stadium wasn't able to supply enough water to fans.
A forensics report which was obtained by The Associated Press has revealed that Benevides died from heat exhaustion. The intense temperatures led to her having a cardio-respiratory arrest. The forensics expert who analysed her body said in the document she had “serious compromise of her lungs and sudden death” due to the heat.

Following the incident, Taylor Swift shared a post on her social media accounts. "I can't believe I'm writing these words but it is with a shattered heart that I say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show," she wrote. "I can't even tell you how devastated I am by this. There’s very little information I have other than the fact she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young.”
Brazil’s justice minister, Flávio Dino, said on X that the ministry would implement “emergency rules” regarding access to water at shows and other public events. While authorities are investigating the circumstances of the death, Rio de Janeiro’s mayor, Eduardo Paes said that the municipality will demand that the show’s production company provide new water distribution points and more ambulances, and that entry be advanced by one hour.
Following Machado's death, Swift invited the Benevides family to meet her at a separate show, covered their travel expenses and made a donation to her parents.
