Alice Costelloe signs to Moshi Moshi Records for new EP, When It's The Time
Alice Costelloe (previously operating under the Al Costelloe abbreviation) has signed to Moshi Moshi to share forthcoming EP, When It's The Time, as the first release under her full name.
Alice Costelloe showcases new music from the EP – which was produced by Mike Lindsay – tonight (10 September) at Next Door Records in Stoke Newington, London.
"I live right by an intense religious organisation,I don’t want to say which one in case they damn me to hell even more, but they often knock on the door with leaflets about saving your soul because the end times are coming," Costelloe says of the forthcoming release. "I had started writing ‘When It's The Time’ about moving on from a romantic relationship but the preachers that kept knocking at the door took the song in a different direction as I started to think about the end of things in general, beyond relationships, to the end of life, the end of the world, and this became a sort of theme of the EP.
"This record opened up my eyes to a whole different way of doing things, not just sonically but also in terms of how to actually enjoy making a record, to have fun with it. It felt like no idea was too silly to explore (even a one minute long recorder solo!). That freedom, encouragement and lack of pressure, combined with Mike’s insane talent made me feel I could truly be and express myself because I knew it was all going to turn out ok. And as a result, even though it doesn’t sound much like what I’ve done before, it feels the most ‘me’ of any record I’ve made.
"In a way, it’s about endings, moving on from old relationships, and contemplating the end of life and the end of the world, but it’s also about desire, desire to dance or drink a glass of wine with someone, but also desire to figure out how to make yourself a better life in a world that often feels apocalyptic."
Costelloe - formerly of critically acclaimed shoegaze duo Big Deal and previously live bassist for Superfood - independently released her debut solo EP, So Neurotic, (under the name Al Costelloe) in September 2023.
When It's The Time is out on 1 November via Moshi Moshi Records.
