Alanis Morissette and Foo Fighters cover Sinéad O'Connor's “Mandinka”
On Saturday evening, at Fuji Rock festival, Foo Fighters were joined on stage by Alanis Morissette to pay tribute to the late Irish singer.
The legendary Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor passed away aged 56 last week. The news broke in a statement by her family which said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”
Since then, many artists have paid tribute to her by covering some of her songs. including Pink and Brandi Carlisle, who played her cover of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U", and Tori Amos who sang “I Am Stretched on Your Grave” and “Three Babies", during a tour stop in San Francisco.
On Saturday evening, Foo Fighters headlined the second night of Fuji Rock in Japan and they brought out Alanis Morissette, who had performed on the same stage a couple hours earlier. Together, they covered O’Connor’s The Lion And The Cobra track “Mandinka".
“Tonight we’re gonna do something that we’ve never done before with someone that we love very much,” Grohl told the crowd. “We want an old friend to come up and sing with us tonight for a very special reason.” Morissette dedicated the song to "a beautiful woman with high intelligence and deep empathy, way ahead of her time, who is no longer with us."
Morissette also posted a personal tribute on her Instagram profile, which read: "Her passion, poetry, and unapologetic expression raised the bar on artistry and female empowerment. Her questioning of societal norms deeply influenced culture’s appreciation of female complexity. Her ability to vulnerably dwell on the small part of the bell-shaped curve was thought provoking, stirring and inspiring."
No cause of death is yet to be revealed.
