ABBA guitarist Lasse Wellander dies aged 70
The musician, who was the main guitarist for all of ABBA's work, passed away on Friday (7 April) after recently being diagnosed with cancer.
As well as touring with ABBA through the late 70s, Wellander helped to create the Mamma Mia! soundtrack, and continued working with Björn and Benny in their post-ABBA period, as well as featuring on the band's 2021 Voyage album.
A statement from his family reads: “It is with indescribable sadness that we have to announce that our beloved Lasse has fallen asleep. Lasse recently fell ill in what turned out to be disseminated cancer and early on Good Friday he passed away, surrounded by his loved ones.”
ABBA posted their own tribute of Wellander and noted that he will be missed for the immense "importance of his creative input in the recording studio as well as his rock solid guitar work on stage".
Last year, ABBA released a multi-format of Gold to celebrate its 30th anniversary.
