Listen: Michael Clark - "Talking To Nobody"
When I think of Michael Clark, I think of a room. It’s full of instruments, not furniture. It’s probably somewhere in Falmouth. It’s here that he’s created what I called “a veritable treasure trove of undiscovered sad bastard alternative,” seemingly oblivious to the fact that anyone else has heard it.
It’s in that room, presumably, that he’s added the latest piece to this melancholy puzzle, and “Talking To Nobody” fits like a charm. As a simple beat plays on a muted snare, the fingerpicked guitar loosely follows the beautiful, placid vocals, and everything drifts ever deeper in to the Elliott Smith territory hinted at on “Something To Be Won”.
Michael Clark exists as something like a myth to me, like my own personal Lewis. I can only hope that he continues to surface occasionally to surprise me with another gem. After all, Michael, “no one’s happy now you’re gone”.
