Even amidst all the ever-diffusing spread of electronic music, folk-pop is enjoying a nifty little heyday of its own. Though, it’s true electronics have been shrewdly added to the folk-pop mix to add dimension and make the genre sound more current.

London-based chanteuse Marika Hackman has proven herself one of the finest purveyors of this sound, steadily building an impressive foundation of work with a pair of EPs in the last 15 months. Hackman’s latest single is a double A-side of a pair of tracks from her upcoming debut LP, first “Drown” and now “Animal Fear”.

Whereas the former treaded similar stark and simmering ground as her earlier work, “Animal Fear” features Hackman turning loose with a slinky shuffle. She keenly counterpoints the propulsive rhythms with her trademark caramel vocals expertly elongating against and tumbling over her accompaniments.

Hackman’s long-awaited debut LP, We Slept At Last, is due 16 February courtesy of Dirty Hit Records and catch her live 24 January at The Barfly in London.
