Listen: Warpaint - "I'll Start Believing"/"No Way Out"
Warpaint have returned today with a new AA-side single called "No Way Out"/"I'll Start Believing", and it's deservedly our Song(s) Of The Day.
"No Way Out" heads up the release. It's 7:21 of solemnity, slow-burning dream-rock. Swamped by reverb, the vocals are the only clarity in a bayou of death march beats, surf-noir guitars and characteristically menacing basslines. Haim-y harmonies herald a poppier vibe, and as the track unravels, it becomes a bizarrely kinetic dance cut: it's incredibly addictive, and feels like Warpaint attempting some variant of organic deep house. Beautiful.
Also on the package is "I'll Start Believing", a double-barrelled tirade of psychedelic grit. It's considerably more jagged and lo-fi than the music on last year's Warpaint LP, and they jettison swirling whirlpool atmospheres and shoegaze-y hallmarks in favour of angular guitars and Pixies-abrasive licks - it'll lull you into a deep trance, but not in the same smooth way. It's sung by the band's Theresa Wayman, and focuses on parental abandonment and independant strength: "Daddy left me once, you know/he took off when I was six months old/and he said something difficult about this/he said I have to do my own thing now..."
The single has been released today, 12 March, via Rough Trade.
Yesterday (11 March), the band teased the new single with a clip on Instagram featuring Jenny Lee Lindberg's sister and former drummer Shannyn Sossamon.
