We’ve long been fans of Lapalux. We first saw the London producer on a Sunday afternoon on the top floor of a Camden pub, wrenching lurching, globular sounds from a controller at which he jabbed nonchalantly. But suffice it to say, Stuart Howard has come on a bit since then. The last time we saw him was also in the middle of the afternoon, but on this occasion he was on the main stage at Sonar, providing a suitably stoned-sounding accompaniment to the 30-degree heat, while Flying Lotus passed him joints from the side of the stage.
And it’s not just his public THC consumption that’s stepped up a gear. ‘The Hours’, (seemingly not a Michael Cunningham tribute, unfortunately) is as assured a track as we have yet heard from Lapalux. The lurching, almost violent side-chaining that has become his trademark is here offset against Avalanches-esque vocal samples and sweetly barbed synths that sound like a buzzsaw cutting through candyfloss.
