Toronto's Ebhoni reigns on the delectable “Cook Food”
The pace of “Cook Food” might be lower key than singer/rapper Ebhoni's previous dancehall-inspired patois banger “TGM”, but her lyricism is just as cutting.
Having modelled for Rihanna’s Fenty lingerie line and collaborated with Vancouver Sleep Clinic and Charly Black, 19-year-old Ebhoni Ogarro picks her partnerships well. On her latest track “Cook Food” she teamed up with Colombian/UK producer Florentino to infuse her West Indian roots with dancehall rhythms and bona fide lyrics, creating distinctive and relatable fusions.
Ebhoni chides an unfaithful partner on the track, calling out greedy guys who proverbially want a greasy burger when they have steak at home. “When you think of 'Cook Food', it brings you a feeling of ‘HOME’ and comfort,” says Ebhoni. “You know someone made that out of LOVE for you. That's what these guys be on - they know you're the one who is really going to love and care for them and do them right, but yet they still want to test you and do some messed up shit.”
“You say you love me like 'Cook Food' / but only when he in a good mood” she sings, a sentiment she describes as “straight facts”, and summarises: “they still want that greasy ass meal when they got something good for them at home.”
