Mere days ago, I was wondering what had happened to Cody Chesnutt. Had he scuttled home, cowed, having realised that he no longer Looks Good In Leather?
Apparently not. In fact, the Georgia soul man is working on a new record, his first longplayer since the near-classic Headphone Masterpiece. If ‘That’s Still Mama’ is an accurate indication, Landing On A Hundred will see Chesnutt take a more straightforward approach to ’60s and ’70s soul than that seen on his debut. Where Headphone sounded like Sly Stone played by Hendrix and released by Stones Throw, ‘That’s Still Mama’ is as unabashed a soul-funk homage as we’ve heard in some years. The horns are gloriously gritty, the breakdown is laughably entertaining, and Chesnutt’s voice is as good as it has ever sounded.
Landing On A Hundred is due out some time later this year. In the meantime, stream ‘That’s Still Mama’ below.
