Jaysus, jiminy Christmas, this five-piece lot from Sheffield, Blessa, have really concocted an addictive doozy of a sound; their post-punk guitar, skittering near-disco percussion and icy new wave construction is nigh on foolproof. Having recently returned from the beach, my poor, delicate and pale skin is still getting over all the sun and heat but Blessa scratch me right where I itch - which happens to thankfully be all over.
The group’s latest offering, “Island Minding”, is the third glimpse of their upcoming debut EP, Love Is An Evol Word. Similar to the previous duo of tracks, Blessa shrewdly mix all those aforementioned ingredients here, though they’ve funked out the hi-hat a bit more and tossed in a near-club like break two-thirds the way through.
It’s still no dance track though, really (those The Cure -like guitars swiftly remind), unless you’re into the kind of maudlin, eyes-closed, swaying Indie type of dancing (which I am)! If you are you needn’t do it alone either, Olivia Neller wispily implores you to “put out your hands for me”…a fool you’d be to not take her up on it.
Blessa’s Love Is An Evol Word EP is out 7 July via their own label, Carmel Records, in conjunction with Generator. You can – MUST – catch them on 2 July at The Waiting Room, London.
