It’s been a short while since we heard from East London musician and producer, Azekel. Last year’s Circa EP was a cosy alt. RnB record, cut with stunning soul vocals that sent shivers to all the right places. Back with a bigger sound this week, “New Romance” is his punchiest and arguably best work to date.
Very few songs become mainstays just seconds in like “New Romance” does, stuffed as it is with ginormous bass trembles, sinister brass and a catchy ooh-aahs. It’s a genuine pleasure to hear Azekel skip so effortlessly between low and high octaves, as glitchy bleeps and piano chords fight to steal attention from the track’s commanding bass pattern. On repeat.
“New Romance” is released on 14 July via Thunderlightning Records with support from Generator.
