Of the musical glues that bind Best Fit together at its absolute core – those emblematic records, bands and labels that radiate an ethos, a formula or simply just a feeling – Annie sits dead centre, a perfect convergence of Nordic cool and brilliant, articulate pop.
Released today, the A&R EP finds the Norwegian singer reunited with Richard X, long-time collaborator and the architect of her finest pop moments. The five tracks (don’t it a comeback – in our world, she never went away) reveal the dynamic between artist and producer to be as progressive and energised as ever.
‘Mixed Emotions’ is the EP’s closing number and finds our heroine in a familiar scenario, paralysed without the closure she craves to move on from the sorry sucker who done her wrong. While we’ve all been there and struggled with such a bind, I think you’ll agree that Annie and Richard X nail the kind of inner turmoil that fits perfectly on our heartbreak mixtape.
Couched in a characteristic immediacy and disposable melodrama that hallmarks the best pop, ‘Mixed Emotions’ segues our emotional core to questions of when exactly the next EP will drop. We’re impatient, dear Annie, and don’t want to wait another three years…
