Good at songs, bad at fidelity“. That’s the tag line on their Myspace page. And, would you believe it, it perfectly sums them up. What we have with Internet Forever is the indie-pop sound of youth being recorded in a basement, with the lights off and a mini tape recorder as their own mechanism of capturing the sheer sound of joy and wonder that these indivuals create.

Their lo-fi act might be seen by some as a kind of bandwagon jumping, but I’m not so sure. It just sounds too damn genuine. Their sound is one of charity shops crying out with every sad and discarded instrument that’s been left on their tired and straining shelves.

‘Break Bones’ is their masterpiece. A bastard, unloved son to some of the more recent indie-pop bands like Los Campesinos! or Johnny Foreigner. A dirty, fractured look in the perfect hallway mirror of life. The simplistic riffs repeats over the jewellry box theme whilst Laura Wolf’s voice sounds child-like in its declaration of innocent playground love. Marvellous.

We fired off some questions to the band to see what makes them tick…

For people out there that have never heard of you. Give us three reasons why they should…
Heartbeeps: That’s a really difficult question to answer, because I’m terrible at describing us. The best thing I’ve heard said about us is that we “do the kind of unadorned pop magic that reminds you why you started liking music in the first place, before the demons of cynicism set in and started gnawing on your brain’s pleasure centres, forever numbing you to the simple magic of a tuneful refrain joyfully sung…”, so maybe if that sounds good you should give us a listen.
Laura Wolf: WE. ARE. GOOD.

Can you recall the moment when you first decided you wanted to become a musician?
HB: Probably when I was about 14 and watched Stereophonics Live At Cardiff Castle DVD.
LW: When I was 9 I wanted to be Mark Owen. Still do a little bit.
Christopher Alcxxk: Since my mum started teaching me piano when I was 5 or so it’s just been what I do.

Where do your songs come from? What’s your inspiration?
LW: They come from re-arranging a few basic chords and heartache. Loads of heartache.

Name your Top 5 records.
HB: Off the top of my head, and in no particular order, The Unicorns – Who Will Cut Our Hair When We’re Gone?, Pavement – Crooked Rain Crooked Rain, Mo-ho-bish-o-pi – Vague Us, Animal Collective – Feels, Architecture In Helsinki – In Case We Die, Silver Jews – Tanglewood Numbers.
LW: Black Candy by Beat Happening, Who Will Cut Our Hair When We’re Gone? by The Unicorns, Give Up by The Postal Service, Terrorbird by The Mae Shi and Elephant Eyelash by Why?
CA: Owls – s/t, Fugazi – The Argument, Love – Forever Changes, At The Drive-In – Relationship Of Command, Violent Femmes – S/t.

What was the first gig you ever played and was it a success?
HB: The first gig we played as a band was in February in a warehouse at Club Milk and it was great!
LW: I can’t actually remember it at all due to beer.
CA: First gig I ever played in my own band with my own songs was at school with a post hardcore band and we rocked a lot.

What one piece of criticism has stuck in your mind and was it justified?
LW: The only bad thing someone told me so far was that our name sucked. Clearly they were wrong.

What one thing has caused you to waste your free time in the past 6 months?
HB: THE INTERNETS.
LW: Livejournal.com
CA: Lethargy.

If you weren’t making music, what do you think you’d be doing?
HB: News anchor.
LW: You’d be a way good news anchor. I’d be drawing shit comic books and writing in my diary alot.
CA: Data entry? I wish.

What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?
HB: I worked in a confectionery factory one summer while I was at university, and it was so soul-destroying that I ran away after five weeks.
LW: I worked in a kitchen of an old people’s home for as long as I could hack it (2 weeks). It was like looking death in the face every day. Only so many meals I could put into a blender without going insane.
CA: Washing dishes in a field, without a sink. Dressed up as a pirate, with full facial scarring costume makeup. Seriously.

We’d like you to make us a mix-tape. Pick five tracks with a theme of your choice.
LW: THEME = YOU
1. I Love You – Beat Happening
2. After You Left – Mirah
3. You Were Alone – CFTPA
4. I’ll Not Contain You – The Microphones
5. You Die – Hymie’s Basement
