Wy work through their emotions on dreamy, spellbinding new single "Bathrooms"

11 April 2017, 09:00 | Written by Austin Maloney

There are some very special bands coming out of Malmö right now (shoutout Echo Ladies), and Wy definitely belong in that category.

Michel Gustafsson and Ebba Ågren have been playing together for a number of years and last year released the magical Never Was EP, a glowing collection of songs with a fair amount of the Cocteau Twins in its DNA.

Now they're on the path to their debut full-length album, and have taken the first step along that path with their new single. "Bathrooms" is a heavy, dreamy song, an atmospheric world of shimmering guitar lines and youthful angst (Wy call their music 'cry-pop' for a reason), a song that burns with raw emotion. Listen below, and then scroll down for a chat with Ebba and Michel about the song.

Introduce us to "Bathrooms".

"It's the first single of our debut-album Okay. Ebba wrote it just after she told her parents that she had wasted all her money last year and felt like hell. We chose it as the first single because it sets the tone of the whole album. It's larger and more personal than anything we've released so far."

"Bathrooms" is about the “self-doubt and confusion of being a 20 year old”. Themes like this are pretty strong in your music. Is songwriting an important release for you?

"Yes. It's good to see your emotions and thoughts clear like that, it becomes easier to process those thoughts when they're in another context."

Tell us a little about the video.

Ebba: "It's just me alone in a big room, like I'm alone expressing the emotions in my head. Then Michel is there in the background, unmoved, like he's always there in my mind but in another dimension, or something. I tend to deal with my emotions alone, and then share my thoughts with Michel when I feel a little bit better. I always try to convince myself that I can make it on my own."

Finally, your debut album Okay is coming out this autumn, what can you tell us about that? What are your plans over the next few months, will you be touring this summer?

"We have toned down the production on the album and focused on writing great guitar parts and lyrics. It's a lot more refined and a little more experimental than our previous releases. Right now we are focusing on finishing the album. We play our first international show at the Waiting Room in London on May 16th, so we're hoping people will show up for that, haha! We plan to tour a lot more in the autumn when the album drops, October 18th."

"Bathrooms" is out 12 April via Hybris.
