Listen: Wilsen – “Magnolia”
Based out of New York but led by the UK’s own Tamsin Wilson, Wilsen have been fairly quiet since the self-recorded release of 2012′s bewitching and renowned Sirens EP. Ahead of their first UK tour beginning in May, title-track “Magnolia” is a passionate and beguiling insight into what can be expected on the new mini-EP of the same name.
“Magnolia” showcases Wilsen’s ability to blend soft, lush vocals with stirring, atmospheric instrumentation impeccably. Wilson’s tone manages to remain heart-achingly honest and candid whilst never faltering or losing control due to emotion or the complex, dynamic melody building around her. When she states that “Fear is stronger than the trial it takes to run”, Wilson’s vocals are as steady and smooth as ever, showing no signs of being afraid.
Having honed the sound previously introduced on Sirens into a majestic and enchanting swell of guitar, synths, and drums, “Magnolia” is a polished, ethereal exercise in creating music about heartbreak that manages to be powerful and vulnerable at the same time. Despite the larger sound that the song presents, Wilsen still manage to cultivate an intimate and confessional feel throughout, carried via Wilson’s effortless and unwavering vocal. “Magnolia” is a strong-willed yet sensitive glimpse into the luscious and compelling sounds that the band demonstrate to perfection.
Wilsen release their four-track EP Magnolia on 18 May. UK tour dates (some supporting Matthew and The Atlas) are as follows:
