Mimikat makes waves with breezy new single “Lantau”
With tropical-feel production and honeyed vocals, “Lantau” is the sophomore single from rising R&B talent Mimikat.
London-based, Sheffield-born, and Singapore/Hong Kong-raised, Mimikat, is a hybrid of influences, cultures, and experiences. Infatuated by R&B icon Mariah Carey from a young age, she paired 'Mimi' – also a Mandarin colloquialism for ‘smile’ – with 'kat'; in reference to a cat that would regularly perch on the window of her childhood home while she played the violin.
Penning words in the form of poems and lyrics by 9-years-old, Mimikat later shared her music to SoundCloud during her time at university, where she also met neighbour-turned-collaborator Azekel (Massive Attack, Gorillaz) and formed the genesis of her debut EP, Where It Started, set for release on online platforms on 10 September.
Now, having established her presence on the scene, Mimikat continues her ascension following her recent, debut single “Days N Nights”.
“Lantau” hears Mimikat singing of a paradisical utopia; the expansive, melodic production making way for her luxurious R&B infused tones. Referencing a lesser-known image of Hong Kong - one dissociated from skyscrapers and neon-tinged bustle - Mimikat coasts in and out of crooning, gospel-like harmonies, and high-ranging ad-libs.
“It is a hopeful message about finding peace, clarity and love within yourself,” she shares, “A gentle reminder to appreciate each moment and live in the present.”
“I called it Lantau as an ode to Hong Kong where I grew up. When I first moved there, I lived on Lantau Island – This beautiful slice of paradise where people live amongst lofty buildings, tropical jungle, sandy beaches and sweeping mountains. I think the song really reflects that sense of serenity, wide-eyed curiosity and happiness that I had when I lived there.”
