Michl creates magic with the stripped-back beauty of new track "I'd Do It Again"
Although garnering a reputation for creating some absolute bangers such as last month's "Better With You", Michl's new effort sees him strip away the gleaming bombast to reveal a magical new side of the artist that we haven't seen much of yet.
Having already basically worked out how to dominate Spotify with his ludicrous streaming numbers, Michl is an artist who appears to really know what he is doing and isn't afraid to take himself out of his comfort zone. "I'd Do It Again" might shock some, as it is a tender song, seeped in a magical form of melancholy. It sees Michl in reminiscing mode, longing to return and go through the motions of past actions again.
On this track, Michl switches the focus away from heavy production to his gentle vocals, delivering the lyrics with a breathtaking honest sadness, literally bearing his soul as he yearns "Break me / Tear my bones apart / I don't really need them".
Whereas we normally see him use synths and impressive production to create heart-racing excitement, on this track they are stripped back to the absolute minimum and only there to heighten the confessional tones of the track. It's a cathartic, glittering cosmos in musical form.
