Listen: Marika Hackman – “Deep Green”
Following on the heels of 2013’s That Iron Taste EP, London-based Marika Hackman conjures up new ghosts with dark folk single, “Deep Green”.
The track kicks off with powerful drums that loom in like trees along the edge of a mossy riverbank. Spectral background vocals rise before flitting aside to clear the way for Hackman’s quietly foreboding tale. There’s tranquility in the landscape she describes, but it’s a pensive calm: one fraught with fear of deep green water, peppered with images of sticky wings and bodies made of shell. The music is deliciously haunting and perfect for repeat listening.
“Deep Green” is from Hackman’s upcoming Deaf Heat EP, available for preorder via iTunes for release on 14 April. She tours the UK in March.
