Listen: Will Joseph Cook - "Message" [Premiere]
Age is just a number, that's what they say, and Will Joseph Cook can vouch for that on the day he releases his second single proper and announces a debut EP You Jump I Run.
The 17 year old emerged with a magical piece of Phoenix-esque ear-wormery back in early February with the quietly brilliant "Streets Of Paris" (also streaming below and available as a free download) and today he follows it up with an even more attention-grabbing track.
"Message" sets Joseph Cook apart from his peers, carefully nodding towards indie-pop rather than falling too far into the soul-inspired, saturated mainstream. It’s a meaningful outing, bringing to mind the likes of Stornoway and Local Natives while displaying real songwriting nouse beyond his young years: warm acoustic lines strum away below an increasingly emotional vocal line, joined by crying backing-vocals and chriping electric guitar work.
'The song was written about those tendencies some have to get to get caught-up in nostalgia and over-glorifying the past, never looking forward" the Kent-based singer explains; '"Message" is about getting away from that.'
Premiering at Best Fit today, stream the deliciously moreish new release below; Will Joseph Cook is one for the future; that “Message” is loud and clear.
'You Jump I Run' will be released digitally and on 10" vinyl via Duly Noted Records 21 April ahead of Will Joseph Cook's debut London show at Servant Jazz Quarters the following day - tickets on sale Friday 9am and available here.
