Listen: Megan Washington - "Limitless" [Premiere]
Australian jazz-singer turned indie-sweetheart Megan Washington has had her second album in the works for some time - she announced writing on the LP was finished in mid-2013, but we’ve been waiting for her to drop a taster of her new work since, and it’s been a long wait. However, having finally announced that her sophomore effort There There will be out later this year, she’s released the first track from it, the jaunty “Limitless”.
Written alongside Sam Dixon (who’s worked with Sia and Adele) “Limitless” powers through the staples of the indie canon: all churning guitars, driving synths and the kind of leisurely vocal that you’ll be humming for days. That said, it is without a shadow of a doubt, a rather excellent pop song. The chameleonic nature of the drop undoubtedly owes much to Washington’s astonishingly strong choice of collaborators - the crisp, tight drum beat comes courtesy of Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa, while Roxy Music’s Leo Abraham offers his services on guitar.
Washington’s sound is reminiscent of the New Romantics of the 80s, but where their lush sonic layers could feel overdone, “Limitless” is a study in the effortlessness of cool. As a taster of what to expect from There There it bodes very well indeed.
