If there was ever a trophy for the finest, most understated pop song of the month, then Mapei’s ‘Don’t Wait’ should be adorned with fanfare and glitter cannons.
After a hiatus of nearly five years, the Stockholm based artist is arguably starting from scratch amongst an already crowded sea of strong minded female fronted acts. Like a less demented ‘We Can’t Stop’, ‘Dont’ Wait’s strength is placed firmly in its steady paced minimalist approach to the “we’re a gang, we cool and we’re gonna have a good time” mentality that Miley Cyrus tries so hard (and invariably fails) to capture.
Built primarily around sparse percussion, finger snaps and rhythmic gun shots, Mapei’s vocal is flawless: throaty and drenched in yearning determination – the track begs to be replayed at every opportunity. Which, we’re more than happy to oblige. Repeatedly.
Mapei’s as-yet untitled new album is due out on Downtown Records next year, whilst ‘Don’t Wait’ will be released officially on November 5.
