An early Best Fit interview with Oxford quartet Glass Animals betrayed magical ambitions, with the group describing their sound as “unicorns whispering, but with no cowbell”. On new track “Gooey” those unicorns have become something darker and more enticing, dripping with temptation and leading you to those dark corners where all the fun happens.

Swooning on a bed of RnB beats, the eerie melody leans seductively on David Bayley’s vocals, which in turn leers from the shadows, alternately imploring his beloved with bizarre pet-names (“my little pooh bear”) and begging to escape somewhere he “can get some space”.

In the tradition of early stylistic exploration, it’s a departure from their equally excellent previous cuts “Psylla” and “Black Mambo”, while still painting from the palette of sexy, languorous shorthand we’ve come to expect of them. It gives you a flavour of where they’re headed, but only enough to leave you craving more.
