Maybe more of a flippant notion today that in days past, possessing someone’s phone number - or someone possessing yours - is still endowed with an absurd power in our interpersonal relationships.
We can call or text a person any day and any time, for good news or devastating news, pleasant surprises or ill-intended harassment. Of course this also means the silence is deafening; no words are spoken louder than a mute mobile when you’re hoping for or expecting a call.
London producer GEoRGiA knows all this, and she reminds us frankly on her latest single, “Digits”, that hers are “bridges / ring it when you need it”. Beneath a menacing canopy of dense, oscillating synths, it seems GEoRGiA’s offering is intended for those stifling moments when it feels the only way out is through the piercing light of a mobile screen.
Grab “Digits” on GEoRGiA’s upcoming EP Come In, just the 5th release from the consistently worthwhile Kaya Kaya label, when it drops 21 July.
