Listen: Kitty and Sad Andy – “Brush Me Off”
Brooklyn-via-Florida rapper Kitty has been slowly edging away from rap, breathily singing over a magical trance soundscape on “Second Life”. Now, on “Brush Me Off”, a collaboration with Californian rapper Sad Andy, she’s living up to her name shortening by going all the way on pop.
Usually, being rejected is embarrassing for the person receiving it but Kitty manages to smoothly turn it around on the other person: “Do I embarrass you boy? You know I’m thirsty”. She utters confidently over a shuddering, wavy bassline, crunchy claps and whirling bubble sound effects so lightly that her voice might float away if you threaten to let go. Sad Andy then jumps in with a 808s and Heartbreaks-esque autotuned verse, proclaiming “haters sound sleazy” and lingering deliberately on the last word.
Kitty’s rapid musical progression doesn’t appear to be stopping any time soon, so be prepared you might have to brush off this current version of her sound.
