Listen: Happyness – “Great Minds Think Alike, All Brains Taste The Same”
South London three-piece Happyness have dropped new track “Great Minds Think Alike, All Brains Taste the Same”, the first single off their debut album Weird Little Birthday due for release in June.
Set somewhere between despair and romance, this is dreamy, dusty indie-pop at its best. Easy riffs recline in deference to the adopted Americana of singer Benji Compston’s vocals, as he muses over his infatuation with a girl who steals his birthday cake while introducing him to the languorous joys of suburban domestic bliss.
Overlooking the awkward and slightly morbid title, it’s pretty clear these boys are onto a good thing. As a follow up to their eponymous EP “Great Minds…” is a reprisal of an undoubtedly familiar sound: all woozy guitar and strung-out lyricism. They’ve earned comparisons to Wilco and Pavement, and they can be assured these will continue – not that anyone’s complaining. It’s a cut to daydream to, drenched in sunshine and nostalgia for things that never quite happened. All tease and no payoff at a startlingly brief 1 minute 56 seconds.
Weird Little Birthday is released 16 June on Weird Smiling.
