Listen: Family Scraps – The Same
Not content with his dual life as lead vocalist of Hookworms – whose full-length debut Pearl Mystic has a comfortable seat at our Best Of 2013 table – and producer to the the most thrilling garage-rock outfits around, including Joanna Gruesome and TRAAMS, MJ has somehow found the time to record solo material under his Family Scraps alias.
Dubbed ‘loserly’ but its creator, ‘The Same’ provides a delicate downbeat touch stacked against his main project, with ribboned guitars unwound by pitter-patter percussion and MJ’s foggy thrums. Although it’s not quite as labyrinthine as your average gloopy psych creeper from Hookworms, sonic disorientation is still very much the name of the game.
