Bully release the video for their grunge-tinged anthem "Trying"
'Bully' seems like a bit of a misnomer for a band whose principal lyricist is prone to penning frank accounts of her own insecurities. "Trying" is a prime example, with guitarist and vocalist Alicia Bognanno narrating a tale of millennial self-doubt - debt and alienation and dreams abound.
Bognanno’s tone falls somewhere in-between Waxahatchee and Courtney Love at her most lucid. In the track’s chorus, her conversational melodies give way to a formidable, gravelly howl. Musically speaking, Bully aren’t twee enough to be classed as pop punk, there’s enough distortion and discontent in their sound to trace some grunge influences. The "Trying" video adopts a similar no-frills approach: it’s just the band tearing it up at an abandoned theme park with a security guard in pursuit. Shots of Bognanno spinning around on a bare-bones ride are appropriately dizzying.
Bully effortlessly evoke the disorientation and disillusionment of your twenties, and with their full-length debut “Feels Like” set to be released on 22 June, they are guaranteed to catch the attention of listeners and critics alike.
