Biig Piig finds beauty in mundanity on "24K"
"24K" is a triumphant ode basking in youthful naivety from the striking Biig Piig.
“24K” is the latest track from London-based singer and rapper Biig Piig, building a sensual atmosphere that evokes the easy intimacy of cohabitation. Over a bed of lazy beats and meandering saxophone, Biig Piig (aka 19-year-old Jess Smyth) juxtaposes everyday images with more traditional moments of tenderness – “I like it when the kitchen’s clean/I like it when you pull me close” – creating a perfect reflection of the simple pleasures of love. The lyrics are drawn directly from life, reflecting Smyth’s “experience of growing in a relationship with someone, finding the mundane things and learning to appreciate them together.”

In addition to making music solo, Biig Piig is also part of the Nine8 Collective, a group of 27 underground musicians, artists and designers who support each other creatively, and whose projects include a high-concept video for “24K”, made in collaboration with and starring Biig Piig herself. This genre-hopping, experimental spirit is typical of the London DIY scene, and Biig Piig is no exception – her page on the Nine8 website states that she “also aspires to make clothes in the near future but is super indecisive so that mightn’t happen”. Whatever her future creative outlet, hers is a distinctive voice that perfectly distills contemporary life and love into gorgeous, evocative vignettes.
