Bellatrix’s “Be Your Bitch” is acidic off-beat pop to satisfy the misandrist in you
With a sardonic, deadpan vocal over the throb and whirr of electronic percussion, “Be Your Bitch” sees London-based artist Bellatrix deliver a pop single with bite.
Originally a jazz double-bass player - trained at Guildhall School of Music, no less - Bellatrix’s path to swiftly breaking hitmaker couldn’t have happened without a generous helping of good luck. Last November, her sole SoundCloud upload attracted the attention of singer-songwriter Nao, who then played the track on her Radio 1 show. Support from other BBC stations followed shortly after.
Now, Bellatrix unveils her official debut, “Be Your Bitch”, and it’s every bit as good as we could have hoped. Dripping with sarcasm, lyrics such as “I can be your bitch, can I? Lucky me,” are delivered over jagged, off-kilter electro-pop to great effect. If you’re looking for a misandrist kiss-off to someone who’s just not in your league, congratulations - you’ve found it.
With co-production from Exmoor Emperor, “Be Your Bitch” claws out a niche for Bellatrix alongside the saccharine love songs of her peers. It’s a welcome contrast, and we can’t wait to hear more.
