Listen: Arthur Beatrice – Grand Union
Ever since they first slipped onto the scene with ‘Midland’ and upped the ante with the Carter EP, we’ve been on edge for the latest from Arthur Beatrice.
Best known for vocals – equal measures commanding and soothing – paired with rolling and riveting instrumentals; a sound that manages to be simultaneously fresh and classic, the four-piece are teasing the 30 September release of the first single from their recently finished debut full length. ‘Grand Union’ is all of that and more.
With Orlando Leopard taking lead vocals – Ella Girardot on harmony, naturally – ‘Grand Union’ defaults beautifully to piano for the hook, painting a, to borrow their own words, devastating picture of emotional – and physical, if the reference is to be implied – transition.
With the rhythm and intricacy showcased on ‘Carter’ articulated in full force, Arthur Beatrice delve deep textually in an elegiac composition that is ubiquitous of the soulful indie-band: identifiable sound, quickly honed, in an engaging new form.
