Track By Track: CAPPA's Queen of Hearts EP

08 November 2016, 23:58

Queen of Hearts is a work that embodies the last year and a half of my life. I feel like with this EP, I got to really tell a story. I wanted to create the best pop work that I could, whilst staying true to my songwriting and creating really honest lyrics. My goal has always been to create music that I would want to listen to, and this EP is that for me.

Next Ex

“Next Ex” is one of my favorite songs on the EP. I came up with the title and theme of the song when I was in high school. I remember how hard I felt like dating was. It always felt like some weird game. The song itself is very tongue and cheek; It’s just about how fickle relationships can be sometimes and how you never feel like you’re on solid ground with someone.

Mad About U

“Mad About U” is definitely my favorite song to preform live. It’s a little bit different for me as it has more of a trap inspired beat to it but I think that’s what makes it so fun. Lyrically, the song is about being really enticed by something that you know isn’t good for you. The first line opens with the lyric “sipping poison” and that is the main theme behind it. It’s the idea of committing to doing something, or going after someone, even when know you know it’s a terrible idea.

I’m Good

“I’m Good” is about not needing someone on your arm to be confident and kick some ass. I’ve been single for the majority of the last couple years and it started pissing me off that, just because I was single, guys felt like I was automatically looking. I think it’s really empowering to do things alone and go after your dreams - if you want to be dating, cool, do it! - but the last year of my life was dedicated to my music, and that’s what “I’m Good” is all about.

Nirvana

Nirvana is probably my favorite song on the “Queen of Hearts” EP. To me, it really sums up what I wanted the EP to be about. It’s about going after what you want even if it’s scary. It’s embracing what’s ahead of you even if you’re going to mess up a long the way.

Other Girls

“Other Girls” was special to me as soon as I wrote it. It was really important to me that the lyrics were super honest. I had just been through a bad breakup and was in a weird spot because the person I was dating started dating someone else super quickly after but would keep reaching out regardless. It made me feel crazy. I think a lot of girls can relate to this song and that makes me happy. It was the first song that I had written off of this EP and it really helped me pave a way for what I wanted the rest of it to sound like; up-beat indiepop with lyrics that told a story.

Hey Hi Hello

I wrote “Hey Hi Hello” about a road trip that I took last summer. Three of my best friends and I drove around the US for over a month and we would just sleep in our car or wherever someone would let us crash. We had all been through some bad heart breaks that year and I remember as soon as we got into California it felt like I had forgotten it all. This song is almost just like a little diary entry from that summer.
