Weaving distinctly sullen undertones into bolshy pop hooks comes naturally to New York duo MS MR but their darker side isn’t contained solely in the music as the video for new single ‘Fantasy’ displays.
Filmed at a diner in Queens, NY, the frantic visuals help narrate the moment of clarity and despondent acceptance that blind and unrequited love can never end well. Subversion is the order of the day as cheerleaders spew out glitter like circus cannons and phone boxes fill with toxic red smoke to the tune of rolling tribal drums, feisty handclaps and twinkles of piano, all topped off with Lizzy Plapinger’s soothing diva vocals. It’s precisely this kind of twisted remoulding of contemporary pop that makes us so excited about MS MR’s debut album, Second Hand Rapture, due out May 14.
