The idea that a man can have too many monikers is obviously one that has never crossed the mind of erstwhile Test Icicles guitarist Dev Hynes, aka Lightspeed Champion, aka Blood Orange but for the purposes of this article, it is the latter nom de plume that will take centre stage.
Having begun performing under the Blood Orange as far back as 2009, Hynes is now set to release his debut Blood Orange album Coastal Grooves via Domino on 8 August. Drawing inspiration from trips taken to the West Coast, the record was produced by Ariel Rechtshaid in L.A. Taken from the forthcoming record is single ‘Sutphin Boulevard,’ due out 1 August, which has been given this brand new Alan Del Rio Ortiz directed video.
A sparse, momentous number ‘Sutphin Boulevard’ sees low, hazy synth keys swell beneath taught, shrilling guitar strings and a cymbal heavy percussive beats while the video shows us Hynes and a group of what I can only assume are performing artist and dancers through a distinctly retro filter.
