[Premier] Savoir Adore: 'We Talk Like Machines' / 'Sparrow' / 'Bodies'

Saturday morning at SXSW sucked. The weather was awful, all grey skies and a freezing wind specked with tiny dashes of what felt like hail. I had a massive hangover, had forgotten to wear socks, and my face was throbbing from where I’d been punched in the eye several hours before.

I was miserable, until this band started playing.

Four modestly dapper guys and one (to quote my editor) hawt girl stood a little awkwardly on the backyard stage of Austin’s Red 7 venue as the few early risers huddled under electric heaters grasping bloody marys. But as the first note hit, everything seemed to get a little lighter. I can’t explain what it was, and I know this reads super cheesy, but they just made me feel better.

Savoir Adore are from Brooklyn. They write bright pop songs that glow as sentiment meets synth and play them with huge smiles and an air of heartening belief.

We’ve been lucky enough to host some exclusive videos for you to help lift any daily gloom. Shot in what feels like a small, dim underground venue, the videos are fuzzed up, features outlined in fairy light. I think that’s why I like watching them – they look as warm as the music makes me feel.

“Bodies” is the band’s first UK single, out May 3.

One of our first gigs was at Cake Shop with MGMT in 2007. It’s a wonderful smaller venue on the lower east side of Manhattan. For a long time I’ve described it as my “happy place’ not only for the great coffee and vibe, but also for the great rising bands the venue hosts every night. They also have a great small collection of vinyl from local bands, and some of the nicest staff of any club in NY. In the last 2 years we’ve played many of the small and mid-sized venues in NY and with this series we really wanted to do something special, so we decided to return to Cake Shop and play 3 Thursdays in a row in February. One of the best parts of the residency was that we were allowed to curate each night, inviting our closest friends and favorite bands to play with us. Bands like French Horn Rebellion, Bloodsugars and Uninhabitable Mansions all performed on the nights. On the first night of the residency we invited Ray Concepcion, a young filmmaker whose work has been appearing on websites like Pitchfork and Stereogum, to film the show. His work has a dreamy, vivid quality to it and we were thrilled to have him document the night. The nights were a huge success and it was an amazing experience to play Cake Shop 3 nights in one month with our closest friends and fans.
