TURNSPIT conjure up romantic illusions on “CINDERELLA GIRL”
With arpeggiated synths, choral vocals, and a spectral presence, Leeds-based synth-pop duo TURNSPIT are crafting the soundtrack to longing and life after dark.
Made up of George Barwick and Jess Clark, TURNSPIT deal in mystery. With only two songs to their name and a near-silent online presence, they’ve quickly built intrigue around their slow-burning aesthetic.
On their latest single “CINDERELLA GIRL”, they explore the reflective, Lynchian-esque edges of nightlife and fairytales. “Thematically it’s about wanting change,” they explain. “We’re drawn to the sounds that move us.” Building on the momentum of their debut single “SURRENDER”, the track feels like the afterglow that lingers long after the dancefloor empties as synths shimmer and Clark’s vocals longs for her godmother to grant a “happy ever after.”
Beneath the surface, it carries a sense of folklore – and it’s not just because of its title. Instrumentally, it has a hypnotic pull to it, recalling the viral, meditative sway of Dorian Concept’s “Hide”, as if that romantic fantasy of being saved were caught in an endless loop. But in the end, the fairytale godmother never comes and the narrator is left to confront the truth that transformation must begin within.
Meeting through a mutual friend, Barwick and Clark quickly realised their creative chemistry thrived in isolation. “It never occurred to us to involve others,” they say. That tight creative control defines the project, as TURNSPIT are not just songwriters but producers. “TURNSPIT is for us as much about production as it is composition. We trust in each other and are very particular.” That closeness defines their approach: mysterious, minimal, and meticulously self-produced.
TURNSPIT have played with the likes of Adult DVD – who named the duo one of their favourite up and coming artists in Leeds – as well as Honesty and Night Tapes, cementing their place within Leeds’ underground local electronic scene with a thriving DIY spirit where experimentation is encouraged.
“CINDERELLA GIRL” embodies that mood of nocturnal tension when reflection takes place and everything just feels a little bit unreal. With new music on the way, TURNSPIT continue to carve out their place and transform an identity that is still revealing its lore.
