Tom A. Smith's latest single “Fashion” is a tailor–made anthem
The Sunderland–born artist releases the kind of tracks to make the walls wobble and the pints jiggle.
At the dawn of his twenties, twenty-one-year-old Tom A. Smith has wasted no time establishing himself as one of the emerging talents of the indie rock scene, receiving rightful accolades by none other than Morrissey, Iman Bowie and Nile Rodgers to name a humble few. The artist has recently been welcomed to Fiction Records, now part of the Virgin Music Group, joining a profuse line of legends including The Cure, The Horrors and Tame Impala.
"Signing to Fiction is incredible," Smith recalls, "So many of my influences came through this label and I feel that connection already. It’s a real honour, and ‘Fashion’ feels like the perfect way to kick off this new era”.
Inaugurating his new age of sonic exploration with incisive hooks, soaked in the anthemic aplomb of post–punk revival, “Fashion” lures listeners in with entrancing loops and grabby drums. Poking fun at the catastrophic financial repercussions of a night out in The Big Smoke, Smith howls, “I’d offer you a drink / but I can’t afford these London prices”, a lyric any Londoner hanging by a thread following a night on the lash can relate to; whilst Smith may be inclined to tighten his belt, he is sure to wear the most fashionable.
The prodigious musician collaborated with fellow Mackem Barry Hyde and Bristolian Ali Chant who respectively co–produced and mixed the riff–dense tune. Reflecting on their collaborative efforts, Smith shares, “I’m very excited for everyone to hear what we’ve created... ["Fashion" has] become a staple of the live set and points the way to our new sound."
Steering his musical roots into a new, ecstatic direction, the artist embroiders “Fashion” with thunderous energy and a textural kerfuffle of snarling synths and grating guitars, weaving into the fabric of this sonic tapestry his signature rowdy, leathery vocals.
Smith is presently spending the best part of his summer evenings dazzling under the stage lights of festivals and arenas around the UK, but it’s business as usual for the precocious musician who first got on the Glastonbury stage before he got his GCSEs. “Fashion” is the type of hook–laden track to never get out of style, so throw out the ol’ rags, slip into your fanciest gear and get ready to indulge in Tom A. Smith’s custom–made gem this summer.
